Inpatient and Outpatient Surgery
Philosophy
To provide compassionate, quality care in support of health needs of the surrounding community. The One-Day Surgical Unit provides high-quality, cost-effective preoperative and postoperative care to patients.
Objective
- To provide designated qualified personnel to render quality care in accordance with the demands of the individual’s needs created by the surgical procedure
- To provide patient teaching and written discharge instructions
- To provide all patients with visual and auditory privacy without compromising patient care or confidentiality.
Inpatient Surgery
You will stay in the hospital up to 23 hours after surgery.
Outpatient Surgery (One-Day Surgery)
You will be in the hospital less than 23 hours after surgery.
The Outpatient Surgery (One-Day Surgery) Unit is located on the 1st floor of the hospital. Upon entering the hospital from the upper level garage, make a right at the Central Registration desk and go down the hall to the Surgical Waiting Room (on your left).
Patient Process
- Patients will go through the Pre-Admission Testing (PAT) either at the hospital or over the phone.
- If you schedule your PAT at the hospital, you may park in the garage and then proceed to the Central Registration Desk (1st floor).
- You will be seen by an anesthesiologist and you may need to have blood work, x-rays, EKG.
- Bring a list of medications you are taking (dosage & time); include over the counter medications and herbal supplements
- On the day of your PAT, please bring the following information: Completed health care proxy form or copy of durable power of attorney or DNR (if applicable); surgical paperwork your doctor may have given you; insurance cards
- Patients need to report to the hospital 60 minutes prior to their scheduled procedure, or as directed by their physician.
- Preoperative teaching will be done and all questions answered by the surgeon and anesthesiologist prior to the procedure.
- After surgery, you may consult with your doctor.
- AMH has 14 private day surgery rooms available to Outpatient Surgery patients.
Staff
Patients will speak with the surgeon and anesthesiologist prior to the procedure.
The department is staffed with Registered Nurses and Patient Care Assistants.

Monday – Friday:
6:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
General Information
- Shower or bathe the evening or morning before surgery. You may brush your teeth without swallowing.
- Personal care items, such as toothbrush, toothpaste, brush/comb, razor, are encouraged if staying overnight.
- No makeup — includes no finger or toe nail polish.
- No jewelry — all piercings need to be removed.
- Dentures — if you are having anesthesia, you will be asked to remove them prior to surgery.
- Clothing — you are encouraged to wear loose, comfortable, easy to access clothing.
- Discomfort — may be experienced following surgery. Please let us know when you’re experiencing pain.
- Pillows & blankets — If you are having arm/hand or leg/foot operated on or are traveling a long distance you may wish to have these for the car ride home to elevate and provide comfort.
- Ride home — For your safety and protection you must have transportation home by a responsible adult. Someone should also stay with you for the first 24 hours after surgery.
- Children ride home — Two people are encouraged for riding home with children for safety.
- Marking operative site — Should you chose to mark your body prior to surgery, mark operative site with “yes.” Make sure to use ink that doesn’t wash off.
